Russell Alexander
Russell was born in 1968 in the Taranaki region. In 1978 the Alexander family moved to Buckland Road in Matamata, which is home to the 1250 acre sheep and beef farm they still manage today.
Russell is a keen sportsman and passionate supporter of sports in the Matamata-Piako District. In his hay day, he played representative Cricket & Rugby including being part of the NZ youth team and played over 100 games at what is now FMG Stadium Waikato. Russell took out the Junior Grade at the NZ Shearing Championships in 1986 and used sheep shearing to get through his study at University of Waikato where he completed his Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS). He went on to open and run a successful accounting practice in Matamata.
Today, Russell is the Founder and CEO of Hobbiton Movie Set, NZ’s world-famous tourism attraction which first began operations in 2002. The extraordinary development and growth of Hobbiton Movie Set, on the back of the movies, has led to it becoming one of the biggest international tourism attractions and a must see activity in New Zealand.
