About Us

Established in 1934, the Waikato Society of Arts (WSA) operates from the historic Artspost building, offering five vibrant galleries, a retail space supporting New Zealand artists, weekly art classes, an art library, and flexible event and meeting spaces for the community. Our art school runs over 30 classes per week and over 900 students per year. Employing local tutors who are qualified in teaching, arts degrees and/or are working artists. Class numbers are kept low at only 8 students per class. Our exhibitions swap over every four weeks in all five galleries and are open free to the public to enjoy six days per week. Monthly openings bring the community together to promote artists and promote well-being, connectivity and support the work of artists. Our retail space has art and objects handmade from throughout New Zealand and the space is beautifully curated every two weeks so there is always a lot for people to browse and enjoy.
The WSA runs 3 NZ art awards. The NZ Painting and Printmaking Awards, the National Youth Art Awards and the Small Sculpture Awards. Through sponsorship the prize money is awarded to artists from throughout New Zealand. The Waikato Society of Arts supports over 1000 artists every year in all forms and stages of their practice.
