Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari

About Us

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari offers one of the most extraordinary nature experiences in Aotearoa - a 3,400-hectare, fully protected, predator-free sanctuary. We are the largest fenced ecosanctuary in the world and home to over 730+ native species of plants and wildlife, including 3,000 kiwi and 3 kakapo (the only place on mainland NZ).

Our species and conservation mahi is at the forefront of global best practice, contributing to the long-term recovery of native species across Aotearoa through translocation programmes and ensuring this special place thrives for generations to come.

Maungatautari is a sacred place to mana whenua, and we honour the ancestral ties and wisdom of Ngati Koroki Kahukura, Ngati Haua, and Raukawa through our co-governance model and the integration of cultural values into our conservation efforts and visitor experiences.

Each year we welcome thousands of students and visitors seeking connection with nature and the ngahere through guided and self-guided eco and cultural experiences, and our Manaaki Hapori outreach programme provides restorative, nature-based experiences for organisations supporting communities in need.

Our corporate offering includes hands-on conservation volunteering alongside guided eco, cultural, and wellness experiences, and we are also the first in Aotearoa to offer verified Nature Credits - turning world-class conservation into measurable, investable impact for businesses and partners.
