Description
Democracy is best served when there is a respectful and reasoned contest of ideas.
Every year the incumbent Finance Minister presents his Budget to Parliament and their party’s MPs go out and sell the plan and the numbers.
This year Grant Robertson delivers his Budget on Thursday the 20th of May, which will give the press and pundit crowd the time to talk it up or tear it to pieces on Friday and over the weekend.
That process does not give New Zealand business people the opportunity to consider an alternative budget with different ideas and numbers.
In order that business in the Waikato have a contest of ideas to ponder, we have asked Andrew Bayly, the Shadow Treasurer, to give the National Party’s version and to explain how they will be implemented, at a meeting in the Gallagher Room at Wintec City campus, from 5.30pm on Monday evening the 24th of May 2021.
With Grant delivering an address to the Waikato Business summit two days later on Wednesday the 26th of May, he will get the opportunity and the platform to reply.
Parliament and its Speaker have not covered themselves in glory in recent weeks. It will be refreshing to get a respectful contest of ideas from Andrew and later from Grant. These two gentlemen are at the heart of their respective party’s economic thinking. You will get to hear directly what they intend to do rather than get a sound bite, a click bait headline, or a slick PR piece masquerading as journalistic copy.
Business, and indeed the voter, have a right to listen directly to a measured and reasoned debate of Budget ideas and implementation strategies for a prosperous New Zealand.
Business is looking for a cohesive plan and an achievable budget for what looks to be a very chaotic future. We want to have faith in the numbers, the people, and their ability to deliver.
From our politician’s lead, we can plan our own futures with some measure of confidence.
