Description
Join the Waikato Chamber of Commerce and Infometrics Principal Economist Brad Olsen for a recap on the economy over the last year, and what might be in store in 2022, proudly sponsored by Greenstone Group.
The Waikato regional economy has remained resilient throughout another challenging year. Key sectors have seen stronger demand, with the primary sector, healthcare, and construction all seeing better activity over the last 12 months. But the hit from COVID-19 remains uneven, with hospitality, retail, and tourism activity all navigating a minefield of changing settings. The Delta outbreak as been a setback to the economic recovery, but strong foundations remain. Other emerging issues are also weighing on businesses, with skills shortages, supply chain issues, and intense inflationary pressures all top of mind. The housing market has continued its stratospheric rise, and interest rates and lending access are now being tightened. The 2021 year has been challenging, and the COVID-19 pandemic continues to make the economic uncertain. But with strong foundations, the Waikato region is well positioned to recovery strongly in 2022.
