Description
Sponsored by Riverlea Theatre and Arts Centre
This is the sensational musical by Jason Robert Brown that took Tik Tok by storm, and saw hit songs like ‘I’m Hurting’, ‘See I’m Smiling’ and ‘The Next Ten Minutes’ featured in multiple arrangements, recordings and videos. The global love of this musical saw the movie released 10 years ago starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan. 2025 sees it’s predicted revival on Broadway – but you don’t need to fly to New York or wait that long. See it right here!
This modern musical ingeniously chronicles the five-year life of a marriage, from meeting to break-up and from break-up to meeting. Emotionally powerful and intimate, it tells the story of two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The show's unconventional structure consists of Cathy telling her story backwards while Jamie tells his story chronologically - the two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show.
The Last Five Years draws on a significant number of genres, from classical to rock to klezmer. It premiered at the Northlight Theatre in Skokie, Illinois, in 2001and reportedly sold more tickets in a single weekend than any other production at that theatre before. The Last Five Years has been produced across hundreds of American cities, in addition to Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, France and the Philippines.
"It's instantly clear... that this poignant, richly dramatic and piercingly honest two-character show is destined to be a hit."
