Description
Can the Waikato unite? And if so how, and what would it look like?
The future of local government is being shaped right now, and business needs to be part of the conversation.
As part of a nationwide reform programme, councils across New Zealand have been tasked with developing proposals for the future structure of local government. With recommendations due to central government by 9 August 2026, decisions made over the coming months could have a lasting impact on how our region is governed, represented and funded.
Join us for a timely and insightful panel discussion featuring four Waikato council chief executives, each bringing a unique perspective on what these proposed changes could mean for our communities, services and economy.
Our expert panel will unpack the facts behind the reform process, explain the roles their councils currently play, and answer your questions about what comes next. The discussion will explore the opportunities, challenges and complexities of what could become the most significant change to local government in New Zealand since 1989.
Featuring:
• Lance Vervoort, Chief Executive, Hamilton City Council
• Craig Hobbs, Chief Executive, Waikato District Council
• David Speirs, Chief Executive, Hauraki District Council
• Chris McLay, Chief Executive, Waikato Regional Council
Guiding the discussion will be MC Kelvyn Eglinton, General Manager, Craigs Investment Partners, bringing a strong business perspective informed by extensive leadership experience across the private sector, local government and community development.
As the region's largest ratepayer group, the business community has a vested interest in understanding the potential impacts of local government reform. Whether you're a business owner, leader, investor or engaged community member, this is an important opportunity to hear directly from those at the centre of the conversation.
Join us to better understand the future of the Waikato and the decisions that could shape our region for decades to come.
