Economic Luncheon update

We are pleased to announce that Michael Barnett, CEO of Auckland Business Chamber will be the moderator of our economic luncheon on Friday 7th August.

Since being appointed as Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Judith Collins is no longer able to be the moderator but will be attending during the luncheon addressing the audience followed by any Q&A.

The forecast of New Zealand’s Economic Recovery is at the forefront of everybody’s mind. As the platform for information sharing, the Waikato Chamber will host senior economists from Westpac, BNZ, ASB and Brad Olsen from Infometrics to discuss ‘What will Waikato’s economic recovery look like'.
 
The Forum will conclude at 3 pm, a cash bar will then open for networking and continued discussion on New Zealand's Economic Recovery.

The Panel 
Mark Smith, Senior Economist, ASB
Mark joined ASB in 2017, with over 20 years of public and private sector experience working as an economist in New Zealand and the UK.
 
His resume includes lengthy stints at ANZ and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and he has also worked at the Bank of England, HM Treasury and the New Zealand Transport Agency. Mark's areas of specialisation include macro-economic and industry analysis, and interest rate strategy.
 
Born and bred in the Waikato, Mark studied at Waikato University where he graduated with a Master of Social Sciences, majoring in Economics.
 
Mark's key strengths are the ability to use his extensive experience, analytical ability, creativity and pragmatism to dig a little deeper and to deliver common sense solutions to tackle complex problems.
 
When not at work Mark likes to travel, keep fit and spend time with his friends and family.

Paul Clark, Industry Economist, Westpac 
Paul joined Westpac’s Economics team as an industry economist in July 2017 focusing on the structural analysis of industry and regional economic performance. Prior to joining Westpac, he was a principal advisor at the New Zealand Transport Agency focusing on environmental analysis and non-financial performance measurement and monitoring. Before emigrating to New Zealand in 2006, Paul had worked extensively in South Africa as an industry economist and as a country risk analyst specialising in developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Paul Conway, Economist BNZ
Paul Conway is currently working as an economic consultant at the Bank of New Zealand. His work with BNZ is focused on making the most of the potential for digital tools and technologies to help lift productivity in New Zealand businesses. Paul previously spent seven years working as the Director of Economics & Research at the New Zealand Productivity Commission. Much of Paul's work at the Commission was focused on firm-level productivity and understanding the obstacles New Zealand businesses face in using technology to improve their performance. Paul has extensive international experience and has previously worked at the OECD and with the World Bank. He has also worked at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.


Brad Olsen, Senior Economist, Infometrics Brad is a Senior Economist at Infometrics and a leading economic commentator across New Zealand who focuses on getting useful information to businesses, decision makers, and the public. At present, he is focused on the economic effects of COVID-19 and the reimagination of the New Zealand economy, as jobs are lost, business practices change, and a “new” normal emerges
