This event also takes place as part of the NZ Chambers 2023 National Conference which the Waikato Chamber is hosting.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker\n\n\n\nRt Hon Chris Hipkins\n\nChris Hipkins is the Leader of the New Zealand Labour Party\, Prime Minister of New Zealand and Member of Parliament for Remutaka.\n\n\n\nBorn in the Hutt Valley\, Chris attended Waterloo Primary School\, Hutt Intermediate and Hutt Valley Memorial College (later known as Petone College)\, where he was the Head Boy in 1996. He went on be the president of the students association at Victoria University in 2000 and 2001\, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Politics and Criminology. After completing his studies\, he worked in a variety of roles across government and business. \n\n\n\nFollowing the 2017 election\, Chris became the Minister of Education\, Minister for the Public Service and Leader of the House. During this time he oversaw a number of significant achievements\, from introducing free and healthy lunches in schools\, to free apprenticeships and trades training which led to record apprenticeship numbers. On top of this\, more schools and classrooms were built across the country\, and almost every state school was upgraded through the School Investment Package. \n\n\n\nChris later took on the ministerial portfolios for Health\, COVID-19 and Police\, where he delivered a range of measures to make New Zealand safer and fairer for everyone. He became the Leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister in January 2023. \n\n\n\nAs well as being the Prime Minister and MP for Remutaka\, he is also the Minister for National Security and Intelligence\, and the Minister Responsible for Ministerial Services. \n\n\n\nA father of two\, Chris is an outdoor enthusiast\, particularly keen on mountain biking\, tramping and swimming through the Hutt Valley\, his home. He places a strong emphasis on social justice and believes that every New Zealander should have the opportunity to reach their full potential in life.
